GKN Additive To Showcase Award-Winning Metal Binder Jetting Mass Production Capabilities At Formnext 2022

BONN, 28 OCTOBER 2022 - GKN Additive, a global leader in digital parts manufacturing and a division of GKN Powder Metallurgy, will be showcasing its award-winning capabilities around Metal Binder Jetting, engineering, and mass production. The company, whose portfolio includes both polymer and metal 3D printing, will demonstrate its end-to-end digital workflow from design through parts sintering and qualification in an IATF 16949:2016 certified environment. Using the example of a real-life use case carried out in collaboration with HP and the French electrical engineering group Schneider Electric, the company will show that 3D metal printing at scale to the highest quality requirements is possible. Industrial scale Metal Binder Jetting offers customers faster time-to-market, more innovative designs, mass customization, and lower finished part costs.

Industrial mass production

Unlike other Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies, Metal Binder Jetting is not limited to prototyping or small batch production. As a sinter-based process the finished parts have characteristics suitable for real-world applications. The sample parts already correspond almost completely to the finished series parts, which means that the process enables scalable 3D metal printing with exact reproduction of the most complex shapes not only on an industrial scale – but also within the desired time and cost framework.

Sinter-based additive manufacturing requires enormous expert knowledge, and this is where GKN Additive's particular know-how lies: as part of GKN Powder Metallurgy, the company can draw on decades of experience from a major industrial group. Among other things, this results in its in-depth powder metallurgy expertise and a market-leading mastery of the sintering process. Combined with its extensive proficiency in binder jetting, GKN Additive can handle the entire process – from design and printing to sintering and post-processing. Thanks to this experience, the company – which is active on a global scale – is able to identify potential problems in advance and knows exactly which adjustments to make to prevent them from occurring in the first place: "We can produce components with complex geometries on an industrial scale and demonstrate additional added value in the products. As consultants and product developers, we take a very close look at the design of the products and, wherever it makes sense, adapt it optimally to customer requirements and the production process," explains John Dulchinos, President at GKN Additive.

Global industry partner

As a global industry partner and one of the top manufacturers of AM parts, GKN Additive understands the needs of the industry. The company's manufacturing sites combine automotive industry standards with AM series production and meet even the most complex industrial requirements. As a result, its engineering experts can provide optimal advice and local support in the implementation of ideas, from the initial concept phase to industrial series production.

"Metal Binder Jetting makes 3D metal printing scalable for industrial series production.”, says Roland Pahl, VP Commercial Europe at GKN Additive. “However, the technology offers much more as it brings significant optimization potential for many components. Industrial companies in all sectors can benefit from the advantages of additive manufacturing techniques with Metal Binder Jetting, especially if they are under high pressure to innovate and have reached their limits with conventional technologies such as metal investment casting."
